On January 1, 2025, a sinister and evil terror attack occurred in New Orleans when a pickup truck rammed into a crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in the deaths of 16 people, including the suspect, and injuring at least 39 others.  The FBI reports that the attack took place around 3:15 a.m. CST during New Year celebrations in the French Quarter, which coincided with the city’s preparations for the Sugar Bowl game later that day.

The suspect behind the wheel of that pickup truck has been identified as U.S. Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S.-born citizen from Texas.  Hours following the attack, Donald Trump falsely suggested on Truth Social that his condemnations of undocumented immigrants had been validated.

“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,” Mr. Trump said on his website, Truth Social. “The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before,” he added falsely. “Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department.”  ~ ABC News

Jabbar drove a rented Ford F-150 pickup truck around a car on Bourbon Street that was serving as a modest police barricade – plowing into the crowd of revelers and causing widespread panic, devastation and deadly injuries. After crashing the truck, he exited the vehicle and engaged in a shootout with police officers before he was fatally shot.  Two police officers were shot and are currently listed as being in stable condition. An ISIS flag was found in the truck, leading the FBI to investigate and condemn the incident as an act of terrorism. The FBI is the lead investigative agency and is working with law enforcement partners to investigate this the terror attack.

Weapons and a potential IED were located in Jabbar’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter. The FBI is trying to determine if Jabbar was working alone or with others.

The attack on Bourbon Street is part of a disturbing trend of vehicle-ramming incidents used as a method of terrorism, inspired by groups like ISIS, according to MSN.  Federal law enforcement had previously warned about the potential for such attacks, especially during large public gatherings. Despite increased security measures, including the use of drones and police barricades, the attack in New Orleans still occurred, highlighting vulnerabilities in public safety protocols

The New Orleans Police Department and federal agencies are continuing their investigation to uncover more details about Jabbar’s motives and any potential connections to terrorist organizations.  The city is also reviewing its security measures to prevent future incidents, including the effectiveness of barricades and other protective measures.

President Joe Biden said during a press conference Wednesday evening from Camp David, that Jabbar had posted videos on social media, indicating that he had been inspired by ISIS, expressing a desire to kill. Biden said that law enforcement agencies  are searching for connections, associations, or coconspirators.

“I have directed my attorney general, the FBI director, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the head of the National Counter Terrorism Center, and the intelligence community to work on this intensively until we have full and complete information,” Biden said.

The president also mentioned the Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas, saying that an investigation is underway into whether it’s related to the New Orleans attack.

“I know while this person committed a terrible assault on the city, the spirit of our New Orleans will never, never, never be defeated. It always will shine forth. We’ve seen that time and time again throughout its history, and I know we’ll see it again in the days and weeks ahead,” Biden said.  ~ WDSU

This deadly attack has left the New Orleans community in mourning, as they come to terms with the loss and seek to strengthen their resilience against such acts of terror.  The attack underscores the ongoing threat of terrorism and the need for vigilant security measures to protect public gatherings and events.

The FBI has set up a digital tip line, and ask that anyone with information or video of the incident to submit them to www.fbi.gov/bourbonstreetattack or call 1-800-CALL-FBI

As a side note, another unfortunate aspect of the attack on Bourbon Street is that the Sugar Bowl which was supposed to be played in New Orleans on Wednesday night has been postponed until today, Thursday, January 2, with the new kickoff time of 3:00 p.m. CT.

“With law enforcement assets that would typically be allocated to an event of this stature currently engaged in active investigations related to the incident, the postponement will allow for additional security resources to be put in place in order to maintain the typical standards of a major event in the Caesars Superdome.”   ~ The Sugar Bowl
