Netflix’s Top 10 most popular / most viewed titles for the last week in 2023
(Updated 01/05/2024) This week, the mega-streaming service Netflix published its global Top 10 lists for films and TV: Film (English), TV (English), Film (Non-English), and TV (Non-English). These lists rank titles based on “views” for each title during a particular week. Netflix defines “views” for a title as the total hours viewed divided by the total runtime. Values are rounded to 100,000.
As 2023 was coming to a close for the week December 25 through 31, Netflix said that for the second week in a row, Zack Snyder’s epic science-fiction fantasy Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire landed at the top of the English Films List and was the most watched title of the week with 34 million views. Viewers were in a Julia Roberts mood this week with Sam Esmail’s apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind at #2 with 14.6 million views, and Garry Marshall’s classic romantic comedy Pretty Woman at #3 which garnered 8.4 million views.
Family films were popular once again as Aardman’s handcrafted stop motion Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget came in at #4 (8.2 million views), The Super Mario Bros. Movie claimed #5 (7.4 million views) and Adam Sandler’s animated comedy Leo spent its sixth week on the list at #6 (6.7 million views). Elsewhere on the list, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick debuted at #7 (6.2 million views).
Viewers embraced the start of a new heist as Berlin (Spain) nabbed the top spot on the Non-English TV List in its debut week with 11.3 million views. The new series is a spin-offof Money Heist, also known as La Casa de Papel, one of Netflix’s most popular series ever.
New romantic comedy The Manny (Mexico) opened at #2 (8.2 million views) while Pókemon Concierge (Japan) debuted at #6 (2.6 million views). Netflix’s newest live-action manga adaptation Yu Yu Hakusho (Japan) stayed strong at #5 (2.6 million views). Stand-up specials had a strong showing this week over on the English TV List. Ricky Gervais: Armageddon debuted at #1 with 8 million views, Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer opened at #5 one day after its premiere (2.2 million views) and Trevor Noah: Where Was I landed at #8 (1.7 million views).
Teen romance drama My Life with the Walter Boys spent its fourth week on the list at #2 (5.4 million views), while the sixth and final season of The Crown held its reign at #3 (3.6 million views). The new fantasy film A Vampire in the Family (Brazil) debuted atop the Non-English Films List with 7.6 million views. True-crime documentary Curry & Cyanide – The Jolly Joseph Case (India) climbed its way to #2 (6.5 million views). Other new films on the list included the comedy Thank You, I’m Sorry (Sweden) at #3 (2.9 million views) and drama Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (India) at #4 (2.8 million views).
01/05/2024 Update: On January 1, 2024, Netflix began streaming a whole batch of DC superhero movies (Aquaman, Justice League, Wonderwoman, etc.,) that heretofore were only available for viewing on Max. Those Warner Bros. favorites did the trick in knocking Rebel Moon out of the top spot.
