Newly produced episodes of ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ returning to TV on Netflix
Streaming service Netflix announced this week that they’ll be rebooting the once hugely popular and first-of-its-kind mystery docuseries “Unsolved Mysteries.” The reboot is being revived by the original creators (Cosgrove/Meurer Productions) along with the producers of Stranger Things (21 Laps). The reboot version of the classic series will maintain the chilling feeling viewers loved about the original, while also telling the stories through the lens of a premium Netflix documentary series.
Each episode will focus on one mystery and once again will look to viewers to help aid investigators in closing the book on long outstanding cases.
The original Unsolved Mysteries ran for 11 seasons and 260 episodes chronicling over 1,000 stories. The show received six Emmy nominations. Each episode spotlighted several mysteries while the rebooted version will dedicate an entire episode to a sole mystery. The new Netflix production of Unsolved Mysteries will start out with 12 episodes.
The original crime drama program started out on NBC in 1987 and started out as a series of specials dealing with cold cases and the paranormal. By the following year it had its own regular time slot, moving to CBS after nine years on the air. Season 11 saw Robert Stack co-hosting Unsolved Mysteries with Virginia Madsen. Yahoo! News shared that:
Lifetime aired a number of new episodes in 2001/2002 and Spike also picked it up between 2008 and 2010 with Dennis Farina replacing Stack following The Untouchables actor’s death in 2003.
According to Fox News, “Netflix has not given viewers a release date yet.”
