Today’s sports headlines don’t only read “Aldon Smith arrested,” but go on to state “Aldon Smith arrested, again.” Smith, formerly with the San Francisco 49ers before moving over to the Oakland Raiders, sat out a few seasons to deal with some legal problems and substance abuse issues. He then signed with the Dallas Cowboys for the 2020 season to be followed by the Seattle Seahawks heading into 2021, “but he was released prior to the start of the season,” according to Fox News Sports.
To put it lightly, 32-year-old Aldon Smith is a repeat offender with a history of being on the wrong side of the law – and he’s currently a free-agent after being released by the Seahawks.
His most recent arrest went down on the evening of December 6. As of yesterday, he was still being detained on a $50,000 bond in a Northern California jail after being charged with a “felony DUI causing injury,” according to TMZ Sports. Smith is scheduled for a court hearing today to address those charges.
Prior to this most recent arrest, Smith had been arrested on DUI charges multiple times in years gone by. His legal woes include a domestic violence allegation made against him back in 2018; and in April of this year while still with the Seahawks, an arrest warrant was issued for him in Chalmette, Louisiana, where he was being accused of assaulting a man in a coffee shop.
Smith was a former No. 7 overall pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. Smith had been suspended multiple times by the NFL for drug-related offenses and personal conduct policy violations. The former first-team All-Pro was out of the league from 2016 to 2019. Smith was reinstated by the league in 2020 and signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys. The DE started all 16 games and recorded five sacks, his most since 2013. ~ NFL
