NFL legend Terrell Davis “shocked, humiliated, angry” after being handcuffed, removed from United Airlines flight
On July 13, following a United Airlines Flight from Denver to Orange County, California, Hall of Fame running back and Super Bowl champion Terrell Davis shared a distressing and humiliating experience that he had recently been forced to endure. The 51-year-old Davis, who played for the Denver Broncos from 1995 to 2001, was placed in handcuffs and arrested by the FBI when the plane landed in California. The arrest came after a “misunderstanding” between he and a flight attendant, with that flight attendant making false accusations about the NFL legend.
The two-time Super Bowl champion said in an Instagram post that during a United Airlines flight with his wife and three children from Denver to Orange County on Saturday, his son asked for a cup of ice during the beverage service. The flight attendant didn’t respond to the request, so Davis said he “calmly reached behind me and lightly tapped his arm.” The flight attendant allegedly shouted “don’t hit me” and left the beverage cart to go to the front of the plane. CBS News reported Davis as saying that the flight attendant was “incredibly rude and blatantly wrong in his accusations of me hitting him” and that he didn’t interact with the attendant for the rest of the flight.
But when the plane landed, the pilot directed all passengers to remain in their seats while law enforcement officials came on board, handcuffed the former running back without providing any explanations and escorted him off the airplane. During the interview with the FBI that followed, officials determined that everything boiled down to a misrepresentation on the part of the flight attendant, who had provided inaccurate accusations regarding what transpired between he and Davis. Officials apologized to Davis and released him from custody.
Expressing his reactions and the emotional impact of being handcuffed and arrested in front of his children, Davis said that he remains “humiliated, embarrassed, powerless, and angry.”
“I refuse to stand by without speaking out on this disgusting display of injustice and deplorable treatment by United Airlines,” Davis said. “I demand a thorough and proper investigation into the flight attendant who blatantly lied and placed undue harm on me and my family,” he said.
Davis’ legal team has been in touch with United Airlines, who has since apologized for the incident and released a statement saying that: “This is clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide, and we have reached out to Mr. Davis’s team to apologize. We have removed the flight attendant from duty while we closely review this matter.“
