(Updated January 6, 2023)  Just hours ago, CNN reported that Damar Hamlin has made “substantial improvement.”   He is awake and moving his hands and feet, according to his doctors.  When he resumed consciousness, the hospital reported that Hamlin scribbled a question while using a clipboard, asking, “Did we win?”

On January 5, The NFL announced that the game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals that had been originally postponed following the injury to Bills’ Safety Damar Hamlin – has now been cancelled.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell went on to say that, “This has been a very difficult week,” Goodell said. “We continue to focus on the recovery of Damar Hamlin and are encouraged by the improvements in his condition as well as the tremendous outpouring of support and care for Damar and his family from across the country.  We are also incredibly appreciative of the amazing work of the medical personnel and commend each and every one of them.”

The NFL went on to outline the key factors leading up to this decision and what it means as the teams approach the playoff season.

(Update from January 4, 2023) Last night’s Monday Night Football game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills was postponed after Bills’ Safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field.  Hamlin went down after a tackle during the game’s first quarter and suffered a hit to the chest.  He got right back up, but then a few seconds later, he just went down and stayed down.

Players from both teams were in shock and dismay when medical personnel rushed to the field and began administering CPR to the fallen player.  He had suffered from a cardiac arrest and wasn’t breathing.  The decision to postpone the game was made after Hamlin’s heartbeat was restored while still on the field.

Hamlin laid motionless on the turf of Cincinnati’s Paycor Stadium for approximately 16 minutes. After receiving life-saving CPR, he was hoisted on to a stretcher and into an ambulance. He was transported to a local hospital via that ambulance in critical condition with family members in attendance.  Players from both teams took a knee on the field honoring the player.

Late Monday night, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals had been postponed due to Hamlin’s collapse.  Goodell went on to say in his statement that:

Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics. He was then transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition.

Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

The NFL has been in constant communication with the NFL Players Association which is in agreement with postponing the game.

Early this morning, the Buffalo Bills announced that the 24-year-old Safety was “”sedated and listed in critical condition.”

Later in the day on January 3, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, after being in contact with the Bills and Bengals teams, plus the NFL Players Association, announced that the postponed the Bills v. Bengals game would not be resumed this week.  And as of today, there is no word as to when that game will take place.

Also on January 3, the world heard directly from Damar Hamlin’s family, who thanked everyone for their love and concern, and asked that everyone please keep Damar in their prayers.

Hamlin spent the night after being hospitalized in the intensive care unit and remained in critical condition the following day, January 2, according to CBS News.  The Bills’ safety’s heart stopped again while he was at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.  A family member reported that, “Hamlin has lung damage and can’t breathe on his own. The player had been receiving 100% oxygen from a ventilator but that is now down to only 50%.
