NFL QB Trevone Boykin pleads guilty to vicious assault of girlfriend, sentenced to three years in prison
Trevone Boykin, the now 26-year-old free agent quarterback who played for the Seattle Seahawks from 2016 – 2017 and who played college ball for Texas Christian University (TCU) from 2012 – 2015, was sentenced to three years behind bars on Wednesday, according to a February 26 report from ESPN. His sentence was the result of a plea deal Boykin entered into with prosecutors in Tarrant County, Texas. The former QB pleaded guilty yesterday in a Fort Worth courtroom to charges of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury in the 2018 beating of his girlfriend – and tampering with a witness.
Boykin had been in the Tarrant County Jail in Fort Worth since December after he ducked paying for a hotel room in nearby Arlington.
Shabrika Bailey alleged that Boykin broke her jaw in two places in the March 2018 beating. The Seahawks cut Boykin in the wake of the allegation.
MSN quoted Allenna Bangs, chief of the Intimate Partner Violence team at the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office as saying that, “Mr. Boykin has failed to take responsibility for any of his assaultive and criminal behavior up until this point.”
“The victim in this case sustained a long-standing relationship of abuse by Mr. Boykin and, along with our office, feels his prison sentence is vindication for what she endured and the consequences he was able to avoid in the past because of his ability on the football field,” Bangs said.
Boykin has a history of violence dating back to at least 2015 when, while still a senior at TCU, he was involved in a San Antonio bar brawl where he was accused of punching a police officer. In 2016 he pleaded no contest to a resisting arrest charge.
Boykin was also arrested in March 2017 following an incident in which he was a passenger in a car that hit Sidebar Bar in Dallas, plus seven people who were on a sidewalk. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana and public intoxication during that incident, according to Dallas County Jail records. ~ MSN
Boykin was an up-and-comer during his college career, according to Yahoo! Sports, winning the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2014 and also finishing in 4th place that year in Heisman Trophy voting. He finished his college career completing 30 out of 1,356 passes with 86 touchdowns.
Seattle had signed Boykin to a futures contract early in 2020 but cut him when the allegations surfaced.
