North Carolina cops stop tractor trailer to find $3M in cash hidden in barrels of raw pork shoulders
Yesterday, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina reported that on December 7, a deputy with their Community Interdiction Team stopped a tractor trailer driven by a Hispanic male traveling south bound on Interstate-85 for “failure to maintain lane and impeding the flow of traffic.” Based on the officer’s training and experience – and a K-9 alert – the tractor trailer was moved to a safe location for a search.
During the search, approximately $3 million dollars in cash was discovered in barrels containing raw pork shoulders.
The Sheriff’s Office has reason to believe that the money was headed to the U.S. / Mexico border. North Carolina authorities also believe that the $3 million in cash originated through the sale of drugs in their area.
ABC News reported Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman as saying, “It’s one of the largest U.S. currency seizures in Cleveland County history.”
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has been called in to help with the investigation. The sheriff’s office did not provide the name of the tractor trailer driver.
