NY Mets postponing Marlins and Yankees games after two Mets test positive for COVID
On Thursday, following two positive tests for COVID-19 in the New York Mets’ organization, the August 20 night game between the New York Mets and Miami Marlins at Marlins Park, as well as the next day’s scheduled game between the Mets and New York Yankees at Citi Field, were postponed to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to be conducted.
CBS News reported that the Mets had one of their players plus one of their staff test positive for the plaguing corona virus. According to Tim Healey of Newsday . . .
The team said those who tested positive or were identified as close contacts remained in Miami. It did not specify how many close contacts had been identified.
The league has now postponed 36 games this season because of positive tests with the Miami Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and the Mets. The Yankees have twice had their schedule interrupted despite reporting no positive tests since opening day. ~ Yahoo! Sports
Sources say that one of the Mets players and one of the coaches tested positive for COVID-19.
The Mets announced that the team would fly back to New York and conduct testing procedures with the entire traveling party. The Mets are conducting contact tracing and the two members that tested positive along with those traced to be within close contact remained in Miami on Thursday night when the rest of the group returned to New York.
Yesterday the Mets announced that, out of an abundance of caution and to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to be performed within the New York Mets’ organization, the “Subway Series” games scheduled between the Mets and New York Yankees at Citi Field today, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd have been postponed.
Also yesterday, the Mets reported that after leaving Miami, everyone in the travel party underwent immediate Covid-19 testing upon arrival back at Citi Field.
The travel party underwent another round of testing yesterday morning and will continue to quarantine as there are no workouts scheduled at Citi Field through the weekend.
The members of the organization that tested positive or were identified as a close contact remained in Miami and will continue to self-isolate and quarantine while undergoing additional testing.
The team will await further results and potential scheduling information from MLB and continue to provide updates when available.
The specifics of the Mets situation is unclear, but the reasons the team caught the virus is not a mystery. Baseball cannot out legislate a viral pandemic — that’s the job of elected officials pushing for baseball with or without suitable testing, protective equipment, and medicinal treatment. Barring a massive turn of events — not in baseball, but our country — and with five weeks left in the regular season, playing 60 games per team is likely a pipe dream. ~ Bradford William Davis, NY Daily News
