NYPD Officer Brian Mulkeen, 33, shot and killed in the Bronx
Brian Mulkeen, 33, a seven-year veteran of the New York City Police Department, died after getting involved with a suspect in the early morning hours of September 29 while on anti-gang patrol at the Edenwald Houses on east 229th Street in the Bronx. While trying to make an arrest, Mulkeen was shot dead in what the NYPD described as an “ambush.”
Fox News reported that the plainclothes Mulkeen was shot several times and rushed to Jacobi Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The 27-year-old unidentified shooting suspect also died at the scene.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., Mulkeen and two other NYPD officers stopped a man for questioning. The man made a run for it. Mulkeen ran after him, caught up with him, and a struggle ensued.
Mulkeen can be heard on a body camera yelling multiple times the suspect was “reaching for it.” Footage from the camera shows the suspect reaching into his waistband for what was later identified as a .32 caliber revolver. ~ NBC News
Police say that it appears that Mulkeen was shot three times with his own gun. Although the suspect also had a gun, his weapon was never fired. “The NYPD said it is still unclear who actually fired Mulkeen’s weapon,” according to NBC.
After Mukeen got shot, five NYPD officers began shooting at the suspect, who reportedly had a history of drug and burglary convictions.
“We lost a hero by every measure, we lost a hero,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
