Oakland A’s catcher arrested after pointing gun at female food delivery driver
Bruce Maxwell, the 26-year-old catcher for the Oakland Athletics, was arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona, on the evening of October 28 after allegedly pointing a gun at a female food delivery driver. Scottsdale Police arrested Maxwell at 6:08 p.m. at his home Saturday night following a complaint by the driver. Maxwell was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct and as of this writing is still behind bars until his initial court appearance, according to The Brownsville Herald.
No explanation for why Maxwell allegedly pointed that gun at the food delivery person was provided. Maxwell made national news toward the end of the 2017 baseball season when he became the first MLB player to take a knee during the National Anthem. At the time, Maxwell said he was kneeling for those who “didn’t have a voice in the face of social injustice,” according to Yahoo! News.
Just last week in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama, Maxwell said that he was refused service in a restaurant because the waiter there recognized him as the Major League Ball player who knelt during the National Anthem. Maxwell went on to accuse that waiter of being a supporter of President Donald Trump. That waiter, identified as Matt Henry, told Fox News that Maxwell was “outright lying” about what happened. Henry went on to tell Fox that “I didn’t even know who Bruce Maxwell was.”
Maxwell, currently the backup catcher for the A’s, was being groomed to start as the starting catcher for Oakland next season. During the 2017 season, he batted .237 with three homers and 22 RBIs.
