With social distancing and trying not to gather in groups of 10 or more in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic being the new norm, a deadly mass-shooting at a D.C. block party around 12:30 a.m. yesterday morning near 33rd Street and Dubois Place in Southeast D.C. brings the pandemic into even more of a crazed focus.  In that shooting, a 17-year-old teen, Christopher Brown, was killed.  Twenty more of the partygoers were injured.

Metro Police in D.C. said that their officers helped transport the off-duty Metro police officer who was injured at the mass shooting to a local hospital.  Family members of Christopher Brown are grieving the loss of the teen.

“You need to stop because you took away something that belonged to me, somebody that I loved so much and somebody dear to me,” Grandmother Patrice Brown told WUSA9 in a phone call hours after the shooting.

I really don’t understand how my child’s life is just gone,” Brown’s mother, Artecka Brown, told News4.

A cell phone video taken at the scene depicts the aftermath of the mass shooting.  Multiple witnesses claimed that more than 100 rounds were fired into the crowd.

At a press conference held to describe the shootings, Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham shared that hundreds of people were gathered at the unsanctioned block party after midnight Sunday when gunmen opened fire.

“There was some kind of a dispute,” Newsham said. “Multiple weapons were produced.”

Police said at least three shooters may have been involved, though no arrests were immediately announced. Newsham said a motive for the shooting wasn’t clear. ~ USA Today

According to CBS News station WJZ, police said that although the block party broke the D.C. mandate regarding gatherings of more that 50 people in one place, police didn’t have enough officers on hand to break up the party.
