O’s Chris Davis clashes with manager Brandon Hyde, had to be restrained by teammates in dugout
Tempers always seem to flare when the Baltimore Orioles face the New York Yankees. And a lackluster season for the beleaguered Orioles as well as for O’s slugger Chris Davis didn’t help the frustration and tension levels in the Baltimore dugout last night when first baseman Davis had to be held back by teammates when he went after the team’s manager, Brandon Hyde. The incident, uncharacteristic of the veteran Davis, went down during the August 7 match-up against New York during the fifth inning in Camden Yards.
Apparently, Hyde said something to Davis in the dugout; and Davis snapped. Video of the incident caught O’s Don Long, Jonathan Villar and Mark Trumbo holding Davis back while Hyde beat a hasty retreat into the tunnel and exited the dugout. Following the incident, Davis was tossed from the game.
MASN correspondent Roch Kubatko shed some light on the subject for us.
… Hyde wouldn’t go into much detail about his dugout confrontation with first baseman Chris Davis that slapped another ugly coat on a 14-2 loss to the Yankees at Camden Yards.
Hyde said he wanted to keep it private and would speak with Davis later. He also expressed remorse that it happened in view of the public, including media, and downplayed the impact it would have on his relationship with Davis and the season.

The last few seasons have seen the Baltimore Orioles firmly entrenched in the cellar. The O’s are in last place in the AL East and 37 games behind the first-place Yankees. Chris Davis has had an uncharacteristically bad year, batting .183.
You can see Davis having to be restrained in the video accompanying this article.
