(Sept. 9 Update) On Tuesday, detectives with the Baltimore County Violent Crimes Unit arrested 19-year-old Samuel Nnam on multiple charges including attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. The charges stem from an early-morning shooting that occurred Saturday, September 4, on the campus of Towson University.
Based on evidence collected at the scene and surveillance video, Nnam began to discharge the firearm he was carrying. In addition to shooting a TU student and one non-TU student, he also ended up shooting himself.
Nnam has also been charged with carrying a loaded handgun as well as use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime. Officers arrested the 19-year-old shortly after he was discharged from an area hospital; Nnam is now at the County Detention Center held without bail.
The female student that was shot is well and looking forward to a complete recovery.
(Original article from September 4) Early this morning, the Baltimore County Police Department reported that three people had to be transported to local hospitals after being shot on the Campus of Towson University (TU) just after 2 a.m. today.
11:13 a.m. Sept. 4 update: A Towson University student was injured during the overnight incident on campus. The female student was treated at an area hospital, is stable and is recovering alongside family. The other two individuals injured in the overnight incident are not affiliated with TU.
The two other victims who are not TU students, are listed in stable condition, according to a 12:30 p.m. update today from Baltimore County Police.
The victims were at a gathering in the center of campus known as “Freedom Square” when the shooting occurred. The victims are expected to survive. Police are saying that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. Around 6 a.m. this morning, the University issued an “all clear” alert – but added that police activity is still ongoing in the area.
From the TU website: Freedom Square is not only a place designed to encourage critical thinking outside of the classroom, it is also a popular place for students to hang out on campus. Stone benches are placed throughout the square so students can work on homework, hang out with friends, relax, and have those thoughtful conversations.
… The purpose of this space is to engage TU students, faculty, and staff in civil discussion, broaden individual perspectives, and raise awareness about current events and social, economic and political issues.
Also this morning, TU President Kim Schatzel and Vice President Vernon Hurte issued a statement to update the university community, saying that Towson University’s Office of Public Safety is working closely with Baltimore County Police, “as the investigation into this incident continues and the victims identified.”
At this time, the scene is secure; however, we’re encouraging everyone, including all students, to remain away from the academic part of campus as police activity is ongoing.
As more information unfolds, we will provide updates through Towson University Communications and social media. Please take a moment today to sign up for our public safety text alert service.
Staff through the Division of Student Affairs, Counseling Center and Residence Life is on campus and providing support for our students and community. Counseling and support services are available through the TU Counseling Center at 410-704-2512.– Kim Schatzel, Ph.D., President
