The crew of the Queensland Ambulance Service in Australia knew they were transporting a woman to a hospice center where the terminally ill patient would soon part from this mortal realm.  Once in the ambulance, the dying woman shared her final wish – to see the ocean one last time.  On November 22, after getting permission from his superiors, paramedic Graeme Cooper drove the unidentified woman to a rocky beachside bluff in Queensland that looked out over Australia’s Hervey Bay, according to MSN.

Cooper told reporters the patient was on “her last journey back to (palliative care) where she was going basically to pass away. We popped her up on the hill where she could see the pier and Fraser Island and right through to Point Burrum and she was ecstatic with it all. I thought the next best thing was I can get some ocean and bring it to her,” Cooper said. “She actually tasted the salt water.”

Another member of the ambulance crew, Danielle Kellan, took the picture of Cooper and their patient as the two looked out over the sea.  Afterwards, Kellan asked the woman what was going through her mind as she looked out over the breaking waves.  The woman said, “I’m at peace, everything is right,'” Kellan said, according to news.com.au. The Queensland Ambulance Service in Australia posted the poignant image of the paramedic and his patient looking out over the ocean and also posted the following on their Facebook page:

This story told to us by Helen Donaldson the Officer in charge of Hervey Bay is too good not to share. A crew were transporting a patient to the palliative care unit of the local Hospital and the patient expressed that she just wished she could be at the beach again. Above and beyond, the crew took a small diversion to the awesome beach at Hervey Bay to give the patient this opportunity – tears were shed and the patient felt very happy.

Sometimes it is not the drugs/training/skills – sometimes all you need is empathy to make a difference!  Great work Hervey Bay team Danielle & Graeme the Service is very proud of you.
