‘Pennyworth’ survives HBO Max slashings, season 3 launches in October
When the recent merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery was finalized this spring – one of the first things the newly merged Warner Bros. Discovery company did was to begin slashing films that were almost finalized or still in production, like the highly anticipated Batgirl film. Also of concern to fans were the numbers of series that were being axed over at HBO Max, like the “Wonder Twins.”
One critically acclaimed HBO Max original series that managed to survive the recent slashing is “Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler.” Pennyworth’s season 3 will be coming to HBO Max this October. Exact date yet to be revealed.
The first two seasons of “Pennyworth” exploded onto the small screen with the feel of the 1960s early James Bond films and the “Avengers” (Emma Peel and John Steed) TV series.
“Pennyworth” follows Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), a former British SAS soldier, who forms a security company in 1960s London and goes to work with young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) and his wife Martha (Emma Paetz), before they become Bruce Wayne’s parents. While season 1 took place in the early 60s, season 2 followed immediately afterwards with Alfred owning a burlesque-style nightclub and still taking side jobs thanks to his skills in the fields of security and espionage. Also in season 2, England is going through a violent civil war, which was never part of DC’s canon in the Batman universe.
Season three of the psychological thriller begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains. ~ Parade
Pennyworth, seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on HBO Max, Prime Video, iTunes, VUDU and YouTube.
