Yesterday, police in West Philadelphia responded to the 5000 block of Walton Avenue in order to conduct a welfare check after a couple living at that address didn’t report to work. When no-one answered the door to the home, police let themselves in by crawling through an open second-floor window. Inside the home, police found that murder suspect, Maurice Louis, 29, had shot and killed his mother, stepfather and two brothers.  One of those stepbrothers was only seven-years old.

Upon entering the residence, the first thing police saw was Louis, “sitting naked in a chair, drinking from a vodka bottle and with a rifle case next to him,” according to CBS News in Philadelphia.

Lewis confessed to the shooting murders of his four family members. Police said that all four victims were found with gunshot wounds to their heads.

Louis’ mother, 51-year-old Janet Woodson, was found by the front door. His stepfather, 56-year-old Leslie Holmes, was found in the dining room. His brothers, 7-year-old Leslie Woodson and 18-year-old Sy-eed Woodson, were discovered dead in the kitchen and a second-floor rear bedroom. ~ CBS News

“It’s tough and it’s taken a toll on our officers. It’s never easy to go to a crime scene and it’s that much harder with a child involved,” Philadelphia Deputy Police Commissioner Joseph Sullivan said.

ABC News in Philly quoted Reggie Woodson, victim Janet Woodson’s older brother as saying, “I’m so numb. I can’t even express what I feel now.” Reggie Woodson said his nephew suffered from depression. “Stuff like that you would never think would happen, and my sister she treated him, gave him everything,” said the uncle.

Although there’s no clear-cut motive yet revealed for the slayings, CBS News reported Acting Philadelphia Police Commissioner Christine Coulter as saying that some sort of familial incident went down that caused the accused murderer to go out and buy a shotgun just one day prior to the shootings.

“He just obviously had some kind of hatred for family members or in that moment did and made a decision to kill them,” Coulter said.

Family members told NBC10 Louis was depressed and schizophrenic. They also said Louis had not been taking his medication at the time of the shooting.

Louis has been charged with four counts of murder and is reportedly cooperating with authorities.
