Pinellas County reports on two same-day inmate deaths

On February 10, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office headquartered in Largo, Florida, reported on two instances of inmate deaths. Both deaths occured on the same day, February 10. Officials say that that in both cases, the deaths do not appear to be suspicious in nature.
Pinellas County Detectives are still investigating the deaths of both inmates.
Inmate Erica Ficca, 35, was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on February 6 after being arrested on one count Violation of Probation for Grand Theft of Motor Vehicle and two counts Violation of Probation for Dealing in Stolen Property.
According to detectives, on February 10 at approximately 2:47 a.m., Ficca was found unconscious and unresponsive in her cell by deputies who were conducting a well-being check. Deputies and medical staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on her until paramedics arrived on the scene to continue those life-saving measures. Ficca was pronounced deceased at 3:27 a.m.
Also on February 10 an autopsy was conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office and concluded that there were no indications of trauma or foul play. A toxicology analysis has been requested and Ficca‘s cause of death is pending.
The second inmate death reported involves 54-year-old Andrew Mayton. Detectives say Mayton was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on January 28 after being arrested by the St. Petersburg Police Department for trespassing after warning.
Detectives learned Mayton was transported to a local hospital for medical reasons later that same evening. Mayton was discharged from the hospital the next day and transported back to the Pinellas County Jail.
According to detectives, on February 9, Mayton was again transported to a local hospital for medical reasons. On February 10 at approximately 12:00 a.m., Mayton was pronounced deceased. At this point in the investigation, detectives have found no evidence that Mayton was in any physical altercations or suffered any injuries while incarcerated.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will work to determine the cause and manner of his death.
Next of kin has been notified for both Erica Ficca and Andrew Mayton. Officials are continuing their investigations into both deaths.
