Pitchers Justin Verlander and Jacob deGrom named 2019 Cy Young Winners
On November 13, the Baseball Writers Association of America announced that Houston Astros All-Star pitcher Justin Verlander was named the 2019 American League Cy Young Award winner – and New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom was named the 2019 National League Cy Young Award winner. The wins mark the second-career Cy Young Awards for each of the pitchers, and the second-straight win for deGrom, who won in 2018 and who is now the 20th pitcher in major league history to win multiple Cy Young Awards.

Verlander won the award by receiving 17 first place votes and 13 second place votes for 171 total points. Finishing in second place was 2019 Astros right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole, while Rays right-hander and former Astro Charlie Morton finished in third place. The Astros are the third franchise in Major League history to have the top-two finishers in a Cy Young race, joining the Arizona Diamondbacks (Randy Johnson and runner-up Curt Schilling in 2001 and 2002) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (Mike Marshall and runner-up Andy Messersmith in 1974; Don Newcombe and runner-up Sal Magile in 1956).).
DeGrom received 29 of 30 first-place votes, earning 207 of a possible 210 voting points, and is the seventh NL pitcher to win back-to-back Cy Youngs, joining Sandy Koufax (1965-1966), Greg Maddux (1992-1995), Randy Johnson (1999-2002), Tim Lincecum (2008-2009), Clayton Kershaw (2013-2014) and Max Scherzer (2016-2017). Tom Seaver is the only other Mets pitcher with multiple Cy Young Awards (1969, 1973, 1975).
“Receiving this award again is an honor and I am so thankful for the Baseball Writers’ Association for their support,” deGrom said. “My goal is to put up zeroes every time I pitch. I’ll take that mindset into next season and try my best to help the Mets win as many games as I can.”
