Pitching Coach Mickey Calloway fired by the Angels following sexual harassment investigation
Up until yesterday, Mickey Callaway – former MLB pitcher – was serving as the pitching coach for the Los Angeles Angels. But on May 26, Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. announced that the 46-year-old Callaway was placed on the Ineligible List following the completion of the MLB’s investigation into his sexual harassment allegations.
Five women who work in sports media recounted their experiences with Callaway to The Athletic in February on the condition that they not be identified. Following that report, more women came forward to say that Callaway made them uncomfortable by sending them inappropriate messages and/or photos, making unwanted advances and more while they worked for the Indians.
Additionally, in 2017, an angry husband repeatedly called the team’s fan services department to complain that Callaway had sent “pornographic material” to his wife. ~ The Athletic
Commissioner Manfred issued the following statement regarding the discipline levied against Callaway:
“My office has completed its investigation into allegations of sexual harassment by Mickey Callaway. Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Callaway violated MLB’s policies, and that placement on the Ineligible List is warranted. We want to thank the many people who cooperated with our Department of Investigations (DOI) in their work, which spanned Mr. Callaway’s positions with three different Clubs. The Clubs that employed Mr. Callaway each fully cooperated with DOI, including providing emails and assisting with identifying key witnesses. Harassment has no place within Major League Baseball, and we are committed to providing an appropriate work environment for all those involved in our game.”
Placement on the Ineligible List is immediate and will continue until, at minimum, the end of the 2022 Championship Season, when Callaway will be eligible to apply for potential reinstatement.
Immediately following the Commissioner’s statement, the Angels fired Callaway and issued their own statement:
“Effective immediately, we are ending Mickey Callaway’s employment with the Angels. We appreciate Major League Baseball’s diligent investigation, and support their decision.”
Callaway said he was “grateful to the commissioner and his office for their thorough investigation.” He went on to apologize to the women he had wronged “who shared with investigators any interaction that made them feel uncomfortable.”
During his playing years, Calloway pitched for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Anaheim Angels, and the Texas Rangers. He was the 2018 – 2019 Manager for the New York Mets and coached for the Cleveland Indians – and until yesterday he was the pitching coach for the Los Angeles Angels.
