The city of Detroit, no stranger to inner city violence, was besieged this weekend when a man went on a random shooting spree.  Four people were shot in four separate incidents on Sunday, August 28.  Three of the victims died from their injuries, one was left wounded, according to CNN.

Each of the victims appeared to have been targeted randomly and are not believed to be connected, Detroit police White said. One was waiting for a bus, another was walking his dog and another was simply on the street, White said. None of them were robbed.

Fox 2 News in Detroit reported that the first shooting took place in the early morning hours on Sunday when a woman, 40, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds.  As police were investigating that shooting, a man, 28, was found shot to death nearby.  By 6:50 a.m., another woman in her 40s had been shot multiple times.

Twenty minutes later, another man inadvertently confronted the shooter. “A man was shot after noticing the suspect looking inside cars. The victim confronted him and the suspect shot him once,” according to investigators.

Detroit’s Police Chief James White took to social media yesterday in an effort to keep the public apprised of the latest developments in those seemingly randomly and terrorist shootings – ending with an announcement that a shooting suspect had been identified and taken into custody.

You can see a video of the Chief’s update on Facebook here.

Chief White said:

Thank you for your continued support today as our community dealt with the unimaginable fear of an active shooter in our city.  We can confirm that the suspect is now in custody.

We’d like to thank our community for vital tips that lead us to his arrest. We are still in the early stages of this investigation, but we are confident that suspect in custody is the person responsible for the multiple deadly shootings.

Chief White’s went on to say: “This did not need to happen. Once again, Detroiters are reeling after lives were senselessly taken at random from our community. We mourn their loss and pray for those fighting for their lives at this hour. There are more questions than answers, but Detroiters can sleep peacefully tonight knowing this suspect is off the streets.

This did not need to happen.

The suspect gained access to a gun and cowardly took innocent lives. Early reports tell us the gun was easily obtained by the suspect.

This did not need to happen.

I firmly believe gun violence is a national crisis that can’t be solved solely by police action.

We are incredibly thankful for the women and men of the Detroit Police Department who put their own lives on the line around the clock to keep us safe.

I’d like to also thank our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners for their continued collaboration and support. “
