Police dog finds missing three-year-old boy
On the evening of March 6, Michigan’s Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office shared the joyous news that their K9 Kuno and his human handler tracked and located a toddler after that little boy went missing near his home in South Haven, Michigan, on Monday. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the three-year-old had managed to open the screen of his home’s front window, crawled through it, and then wandered off on foot into greater Geneva Township.
When the toddler was reported missing to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, he had not been seen for about a half hour and had been wearing only a diaper.
K9 Kuno and his handler, Deputy Calhoun, were called in from off duty to help in the search. K9 Kuno found a footprint leading northwest from the boy’s home on 68th Street near Baseline Road in Geneva Township and followed the track for nearly a quarter mile.
K9 Kuno found the child about 50 yards from a large body of water. A deputy assisting the K9 team in theory track can be seen running up to the crying toddler and picking him up to comfort him.

The sheriff’s office says the boy had minor scratches but was in good health. Sheriff Abbott added, “That particular K-9 team has already found four children with the same type scenario. So dispatch immediately reached out to that K-9 officer, and he came en route immediately.”
The Sheriff’s Office went on to report that, “This is what it is all about. This is why training for real life matters. We are incredibly proud of K9 Kuno and his handler. Their work helped save a little boy’s life.”
