Police trying to identify human skeletal remains discovered in Vero Beach woods
Yesterday, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) shared details of an ongoing investigation where local Florida law enforcement agencies have been trying to identify the human remains of a man whose bones were found scattered in and around wooded areas in Vero Beach, Florida.
On December 14, 2022, The Vero Beach Police Department (VBPD) received a call for service in the area of Dahlia Lane and Mockingbird Drive in reference to three men in a vehicle possibly armed with a gun. Officers responded and located the vehicle driving in the area. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle but it quickly fled at “recklessly high speeds,” according to a quote from the VBPD Case Report.
VBPD Officers were able to maintain a visual on the fleeing vehicle as it traveled north on Indian River Blvd. A short time later they found the vehicle unoccupied near 53rd Street and discovered that it had crashed. Several witnesses stated that three males were seen running from the vehicle into a heavily wooded area north of 53rd Street. A multi-agency perimeter was established to search for the armed subjects.
Personnel from the Vero Beach Police Department, Sebastian Police Department and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search.
While searching for the three subjects, the K9 Deputies and Officers that were in the woods located skeletal remains in an undeveloped wooded property near. The remains had been there for some time and were determined to be unrelated to the search for the armed subjects.
The location of the remains was flagged and the K9 deputies continued to track the subjects through the woods. All three subjects were located and taken into custody a short time later.
Once the subjects were in custody, the investigation turned to the skeletal remains that were discovered in those woods. Detectives responded to the area to begin their investigation.
The Medical Examiner’s Office examined the remains and believes they are of an Asian male in his 50’s or 60’s, approximately 5’9” tall.
Through facial bone imaging and reconstruction, the above representation of the male was created to provide a visual of what he may have looked like.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in identifying the remains.
If you recognize the depicted male or have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 772-569-6700.
