Pregnant Md. woman critical after being set on fire by ‘coward’ boyfriend
A pregnant, 30-year-old woman from Capitol Heights, Maryland, was set on fire by her boyfriend who was angry at her for getting pregnant. Andrea Grinage is currently listed in critical condition and fighting for her life. Police in Prince George’s County, who responded to the woman’s apartment at 11:45 a.m. on August 8 at 1405 Elkwood Lane, said that Grinage was forced to deliver her baby after being found with life-threatening burns covering most of her body, according to NBC News in Washington. Her baby, born seven-weeks premature, survived.
When first responders arrived at her apartment, Grinage said that her boyfriend doused her with a flammable liquid and set her on fire. At a press conference held on Friday afternoon, Prince George’s County Police spokeswoman Jennifer Donelan said: “She was very brave. We want her family to know how brave she was, suffering as badly as she was — critically burned, worried about her unborn child, dealing with those injuries and was able to share that information with us so that we could get moving with our investigation and locate this person.”
First responders transported Grinage to the Burn Unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center where she gave birth to a baby girl, according to Fox News in Washington. Although the baby is also listed as being in critical condition, the newborn is doing okay, according to Grinage’s father, Arthur Williams. NBC quoted Grinage’s dad as saying that the baby is “hanging in there. She’s doing fine. She’s beautiful,” he said. Regarding the man that set his daughter on fire, Grinage’s father said, “He’s a coward. He’s less than a man. Walk away, if you don’t want the responsibility, walk away.”
“It all stems from him not wanting to take responsibility of him being a newborn dad,” said Williams. “He didn’t want that. And once a baby is conceived it’s too late for all that. You either step up and be a dad or you walk away.” ~ per WJLA
The boyfriend, angry that Grinage got pregnant, is in custody after surrendering himself to police in Washington D.C. Charges against him are still pending. Grinage’s parents have established a GoFundMe page in their daughter’s name. That page reads:
… my daughter was critically burned over 90% of her body as a result of domestic violence. She’s a mother of 2 boys ages 15 and 8 and a newborn that was born 7 weeks premature. Everything was lost in the fire and she must begin a new with your help. She has a long road to recovery and unknown medical cost. PLEASE stop domestic violence!!
