Prison escapee from Kentucky arrested in Indian River County
On October 27 at 11:30 p.m., Florida’s Brevard County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and requested assistance in locating a Ford Mustang that was last seen travelling south on A1A from Sebastian Inlet. The vehicle was reported to be driven by James Cowles, a prison escapee from Kentucky. Cowles was serving a 23-year prison sentence for Burglary and Grand Theft when he fled Kentucky.
The 44-year-old Cowles has a lengthy criminal record with multiple felonies.
Deputy Rodriguez of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office saw the suspect vehicle pass him; and as Deputy Rodriguez went to turn around, the driver of the Mustang fled at a high rate of speed. Deputy Rodriguez was able to locate the suspect vehicle hidden on a golf cart path; but it was unoccupied.
Deputy Reimsnyder and his K9 partner Kobi responded to the scene and began to track the suspect from the vehicle.
After a lengthy tracking session, K9 Kobi located Cowles hiding in a brush line. The fugitive was taken into custody and transported to Indian River County Jail for further processing.
