Punta Gorda mom found deceased in state of decomposition, son arrested
On May 8, Florida’s Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) headquartered in Punta Gorda, identified 55-year-old Layni K. Carver as the deceased individual found inside a home on Turbak Drive on May 5, just before 5 pm, when deputies arrived at the residence to perform a requested well-being check. After knocking multiple times at the home located in the 29000 block with no response, deputies investigated the perimeter, and noticed a foul odor emitting from the residence.
Justin D. Carver, 37, eventually stepped outside, immediately locking the door behind him. Deputies noticed Carver’s evasive behavior and began to question him about the well-being of the victim. Once inside the home, deputies were able to locate the victim in a stage of decomposition on the floor of one of the bedrooms.
Officials confirm that the victim is the mother of Justin Carver. The cause of death is yet to be determined, pending the availability of toxicology results which are expected in the coming weeks. ~ ABC-7 News
Carver was arrested and charged with Failing to Report a Death to Medical Examiner and Resisting Officer Without Violence.
“The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office takes incidents of this nature seriously and is committed to ensuring that justice is served. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time,” states Sheriff Bill Prummell.
The victim, Layni Carver, was not a stranger to the Sheriff’s Office. Back on August 1, 2021, CCSO reported that she was involved in a domestic dispute at that same residence and was accused of shooting at her boyfriend. No-one was injured in the shooting though. The boyfriend safely ran off to a neighbor’s house and Layni barricaded herself inside of her Turbak Drive home.
Eventually, SWAT, Aviation, and Crisis Negotiation teams had to be called to the scene. Afterwards, Layni Carver was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon without Intent to Kill.
The Sheriff’s Office reported that an autopsy will be conducted on Layni Carver’s remains and any additional updates will be released as their investigations allows. The son is currently being held at the Charlotte County Jail. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
