A small family-owned Conservative TV network, One America News Network (OANN), has sued Rachel Maddow in a federal defamation suit for characterizing that network as “paid Russian propaganda.”  The suit against Maddow was filed in San Francisco on August 9.  The One America News Network competes with Fox News for viewership and “has received favorable tweets from President Donald Trump,” according to Time.

The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of California, accuses Maddow of making the claim in retaliation for OANN president Charles Herring accusing Comcast, MSNBC’s parent company, of “anti-competitive censorship” in refusing to carry the network as part of its cable programming, according to the publication. ~ The Hill

The OAN lawsuit claims that Maddow knew her Russian propaganda statement was a false one and that she issued that statement “with the intent of damaging the company’s business due to its vocal support of President Trump.”

Maddow’s statement regarding OANN was based on a Daily Beast report which claimed that an OANN employee was also employed by the news organization Sputnik News – a news service that was created by the Russian government-owned news agency Rossiya Segodnya.

During a July 22 broadcast of her TV show, Maddow made the following statements that OANN felt were worthy of the lawsuit:

“In this case, the most obsequiously pro-Trump right-wing news outlet in America really literally is paid Russian propaganda.”

“Their on-air U.S. politics reporter is paid by the Russian government to produce propaganda for that government.”

The One America News lawsuit names Maddow, Comcast, MSNBC and NBCUniversal Media, according to USA Today.

For those not familiar with Maddow, the 46-year-old Liberal commentator hosts her own television show, “The Rachel Maddow Show,” on MSNBC and also hosts a syndicated talk radio program, also dubbed “The Rachel Maddow Show” on Air America Radio.  The openly gay TV anchor holds a PhD from Oxford University, a Master’s Degree from Lincoln College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Stanford University.
