It was a classic gala Hollywood affair last night at the 2024 Grammy Awards Show, an evening of musical tributes hosted by former “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah and highlighted by splashes of female empowerment and surprising wins. Also surprising was hearing that Rapper Killer Mike was taken away in handcuffs at the Grammy’s for a reported altercation after winning three trophies in the rap categories.
Following his being escorted away from the evening’s festivities by the LAPD, Rapper Killer Mike, aka Michael Render, was charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly getting into an altercation with a security guard at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, where the ceremony was held last night.
Reportedly, the incident occurred shortly before the main show began, when Killer Mike was celebrating his wins backstage with his team and other artists. He had just swept the rap awards, winning best rap performance, best rap song, and best rap album for his solo project “Michael,” which featured collaborations with Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane. It was his first Grammy recognition in seven years, and he expressed his gratitude and joy in his acceptance speeches.
Things took a turn for the worse when the rapper was approached by a security guard who asked him to leave the backstage area. Killer Mike refused, claiming that he had the right to be there as a winner and a performer. He was scheduled to join his rap duo Run the Jewels on stage later in the night. The security guard insisted that he had to follow the rules and tried to escort him out.
That’s when Killer Mike allegedly pushed the guard and punched him in the face, causing a minor injury. The police were called to the scene and arrested Killer Mike on the spot. The Los Angeles Police Department took to X to share more information surrounding the incident.

The “suspect” was identified by the police as “48-year-old Michael Render,” adding that the performer was “booked for Misdemeanor Battery 243(A) PC, and is in the process of being released.”
Earlier this morning, Forbes reported that Mike did not comment publicly on the incident or the arrest but reportedly spoke to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and posted on his X account early Monday: “The South Said Something! Amen”.
