Retired Red Sox legend David Ortiz, a.k.a. “Big Papi,” was shot in the back while at a nightclub in his native Dominican Republic late Sunday night.  The slugger’s dad informed the media waiting outside of his son’s Santo Domingo hospital that Ortiz was shot in the lower back with the bullet exiting through his stomach. No major organs were compromised.

Leo Ortiz went on to say that his son got out of surgery a little after midnight and that his condition is listed as serious but stable. The proud dad told the media that, “Big Papi will be around for a long time.”

By 1:36 a.m. on Sunday, the Red Sox released a statement concerning their former home run hitter:

Late last night we were made aware of an incident involving David Ortiz in the Dominican Republic. David’s family has confirmed that he sustained a gunshot wound to the lower back/abdominal region. David is being treated at Clinica Abel Gonzalez in Santo Domingo where he is recovering after surgery.

We have offered David’s family all available resources to aid in his recovery and will continue to keep them in our hearts.  ~ per MLB

Ortiz, 43, is expected to make a full recovery from that brutal shooting.

Guests at the nightclub where Big Papi was shot took matters into their own hands and apprehended the man suspected to be the shooter, according to Mass Live.  The shooting was captured on surveillance video, which shows Ortiz sitting at the nightclub minding his own business when he was ambushed and shot.

The gunman is now in custody.

Dominican TV host Jhoel Lopez was also hit by a bullet during the attack. One other individual, who has yet to be identified, was also reportedly injured.

Ortiz retired after the 2016 season and is largely credited for helping the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004, 2007 and 2013.

Ortiz was a 10-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion with the Red Sox. He hit 541 career home runs over his 20-year career, 483 of them with Boston, before retiring at the end of the 2016 season. ~ USA Today
