You may recall during Trump’s 2024 run for the presidency, that in addition to claiming he would bring down the price of eggs and grocery prices in general, that he would also end the war in the Ukraine in the first 24 hours of winning the presidential race.  Although ending the war in Ukraine is a nice thought, not too many of us thought he could pull it off so quickly. To his credit though, Trump’s team did present a plan to the Kremlin for ending the Russian invasion which is now entering year four – an invasion which has reduced huge chunks of the Ukraine to rubble.

Russia said it’s been reviewing Trump’s peace plan and is “not happy, of course.”  According to Aljazeera, yesterday (December 30,) Russia officially rejected Trump’s plan to end the ongoing conflict.  The peace plan, which aimed to halt hostilities and establish a ceasefire, included deferring Ukraine’s NATO membership for 20 years and creating a demilitarized zone along the current front lines.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the proposal was unacceptable to Moscow. He emphasized that delaying Ukraine’s NATO membership would not address Russia’s security concerns. Lavrov also criticized the idea of a demilitarized zone, arguing that it would not guarantee long-term stability and security for Russia ~ MSN

And for those of us that were counting on Trump’s bromance with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to help end the hostilities, Lavrov’s rejection of the Trump plan raises the specter of the long-held mistrust and ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Russia.  Also, as it turned out, including a proposed demilitarized zone and the deferral of NATO membership were unpopular proposals with Ukrainian officials as well as the Russians.  Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously expressed concerns about any plan that would compromise Ukraine’s territorial integrity or sovereignty

According to Newsweek, the rejection of Trump’s plan also highlights the complexities of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has been ongoing since 2014. The war has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of people, with both sides entrenched in their positions. Russia’s insistence on security guarantees and Ukraine’s demand for sovereignty and territorial integrity remain major obstacles to any peace agreement.

And even though Trump’s plan has been officially rejected by Moscow, and unofficially by Ukraine, it does highlight those complexities and brings them to the forefront for, perhaps, future consideration by all parties involved.  As Trump prepares to move back into the White House, the rejection of his peace plan by Russia suggests that achieving a resolution to the conflict might be a more challenging task then he originally believed.

Earlier this month in an interview with CBS News, Trump also admitted that he probably wouldn’t be able to bring down the price of eggs.
