Scammers posing as Electric Co. reps want you to send them gift cards or lose your home’s power
Earlier today, the
Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in Southwest Florida issued a warning
stating that the department had been alerted to someone calling residents who
was posing as a Florida Power and Light (FPL) representative. The caller states that due to the
switch from City of Vero Beach Utilities over to FPL, that some payments got
lost and to ensure that the residents’ power isn’t disconnected while they sort
out the issue, a payment should be made using a GoBank card purchased from CVS.
It should be noted that the calls
may come from a 1-800 number, may happen late in the day and the automated
phone prompts are similar to FPL’s prompt system.
FPL will NEVER call you requesting money via any type of gift card, prepaid card, debit card, etc.
Tips to avoid being scammed:
The Sheriff’s Office recommends that all residents should review this link from the FPL Website designed to help protect yourselves from scams, fraud and imposters – especially as those scams relate to FPL.
