Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs can’t be charged for brutal domestic violence assault captured on video
The world at large was subjected to a disturbing and violent series of images when on Friday, CNN released a hotel surveillance video that showed a mostly naked Rap star Sean “Diddy” Combs – dressed only with a towel loosely wrapped around his waist – grabbing his then girlfriend by the head, knocking her to the floor in a hotel hallway, kicking her in the face while she was down, kicking her again, and then dragging her back to his hotel room. You can check out that brutal video below.
The victim in this vicious and violent assault was identified as Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura, the woman who was romantically involved with Diddy at the time. The assault took place inside the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Century City on March 5, 2016, according to FOX News. Ventura, 37, and Combs, 54, dated for about 11 years before breaking up in 2018. In her civil lawsuit filed against Combs under New York state’s Adult Survivors Act, Ventura accused Combs of rape, sexual assault and sex trafficking, according to a report by The Los Angeles Times.
Reportedly, Combs paid the California hotel $50,000 and obtained the surveillance footage in an effort to keep that recorded domestic assault out of the public eye.
In her quickly settled lawsuit of November 2023, Ventura detailed a March 2016 attack on her by Combs at the upscale hotel. The complaint from attorney Doug Wigdor also noted that she had been informed the Combs “paid the InterContinental Century City $50,000 for the hallway security footage from that evening.” ~ Deadline
For now at least, it appears that Combs won’t be criminally charged for his beatdown of Ventura as the five-year statute of limitations for domestic violence charges in California has come and gone. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office released a statement saying that due to the statute of limitations having expired, their hands are tied.
“We are aware of the video that has been circulating online allegedly depicting Sean Combs assaulting a young woman in Los Angeles,” the statement reads. “We find the images extremely disturbing and difficult to watch. If the conduct depicted occurred in 2016, unfortunately we would be unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted.”
And while domestic violence charges won’t be brought at this time, there may be a pathway to investigate this assault in the near future.
… a prominent law-enforcement source tells Deadline that the much-accused Combs may himself have provided a potential pathway for investigation. “Reports that Combs paid $50,000 to the hotel for the footage of the incident soon after it occurred could, I say could, present the possibility of intent to cover up a crime,” the source said. “On the surface, that could warrant opening an investigation.”
Not long after Ventura sued Combs back in 2023, several other suits have been brought forth against Diddy accusing the rapper of sexual assault, and even the sexual trafficking of a minor. In March of this year, the FBI and Homeland Security agents raided Diddy’s Los Angeles and Miami homes in what the Feds described as called as an “ongoing investigation.”
