Search for Jan. 6 ‘Capitol Hill Pipe Bomber’ continues, $500K reward still available
Ace News Today has been covering the violence that went down on January 6, 2021 in our nation’s capital ever since the outset. Three years down the road, there are several things to consider:
- We are now at the three-year anniversary of the day when the U.S. Capitol Building was stormed during a violent riot in which a mob of Trump supporters set out to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election by disrupting the joint session of Congress assembled to count electoral votes and make President-elect Joe Biden’s victory official.
- Ex-president Donald Trump was charged with obstructing an official proceeding and three other counts stemming from his alleged efforts to resist the peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 presidential election. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and has mounted an attempt to dismiss the case based on “total presidential immunity,” which will be considered by a federal appeals court in the nation’s capital next week.
- Law enforcement officials across the board are still trying to identify and apprehend the guy known as the “Capitol Hill Pipe Bomber,” who on January 6, 2021, placed several pipe bombs in the area around the Capitol.
The FBI Washington Field Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Washington Field Division, the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and the U.S. Capitol Police Department (USCP) continue to seek the public’s assistance to identify the suspect who placed pipe bombs near the headquarters of the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C., in January 2021.
A $500,000 reward remains in effect for information leading to the individual’s arrest and conviction.
The suspect placed pipe bombs in a Capitol Hill neighborhood near the Republican National Committee Headquarters, located at 310 First St. SE, and the Democratic National Committee Headquarters, located at 430 South Capitol St. SE, #3, on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, between approximately 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.—the night before the riots at the U.S. Capitol.
The person who placed these bombs wore a face mask, glasses, a grey hooded sweatshirt, gloves, and black and light grey Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a yellow logo. The suspect used a backpack to transport each of the devices.
Although these bombs did not detonate, it is important to remember the suspect walked along residential and commercial areas in Capitol Hill just blocks from the U.S. Capitol with viable pipe bombs that could have seriously injured or killed innocent bystanders. Moreover, the suspect may still pose a danger to the public or themselves.
“Over the past three years, a dedicated team of FBI agents, analysts, data scientists, and law enforcement partners has worked thousands of hours conducting interviews, reviewing physical and digital evidence, and assessing tips from the public about who may have placed pipe bombs on Capitol Hill,” said David Sundberg, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office.
“The tips we have received so far from the American people have helped us advance the investigation, and we ask the public to continue to assist us by taking a fresh look at our Seeking Information webpage, which includes images and video of the suspect, the suspect’s backpack, the suspect’s shoes, the explosive devices, and a map of the route the suspect walked the night the pipe bombs were placed.
“We urge anyone who may have previously hesitated to come forward or who may not have realized they had important information to contact us and share anything relevant. A reward of up to $500,000 is still available for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for this dangerous attempt to harm our community,” Sundberg said.
If you have any information, please call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324) or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov. Tips can remain anonymous.
