(February 17, 2025, 1:12 p.m.) Just now, Florida’s Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) announced that an arrest has been made in a hit and run crash that forced the vehicle containing a mother and her three-year-old child into one of the Sunshine State’s many canals. The crash occurred this morning around 9 a.m. along Kanner Highway.
The car the woman was driving was struck by a semi-truck that was changing lanes, forcing her car off the road and into the waterway. Witnesses that were on the scene confirmed to deputies that the impact of the crash forced the woman’s car to veer from the road, forcing it into the water. Fortunately, the woman was able to free herself and her child from the vehicle and make it to the bank without suffering any serious injuries.
The driver of the truck, identified as 69-year-old Alton Winters of Florida, slowed down briefly, but then drove off to a local produce company, later claiming to police that he had to make a delivery.
The driver of that semi was later located by the Stuart Police Department and taken into custody. Winters was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and improper lane change. The woman and her child were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
