On July 7, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, headquartered in Vero Beach, Florida, reported that their agency was actively investigating two attempted abductions that occurred in Vero Beach’s Pointe West neighborhood.  Both incidents happened this past week after the summer sun went down, and involved an unidentified masked man approaching and assaulting two women in the usually quiet Pointe West neighborhood.

In both failed abduction attempts, the man ran off when the women screamed for help and bravely and physically pushed him away after he accosted them.

Both assaults occurred several days apart and both occurred after dark. The first assault went down on the night of July 2 around 10:15 p.m. and the second assault occurred slightly after midnight on July 7.  The victims described their attacker as a masked man wearing a hoodie with a muscular build.

A woman was walking home at the time, near the corner of Pointe West Way and Pointe West Drive. Deputies say a guy came up to her with a knife, but she was able to get away safely.

About 10 minutes after midnight on July 7th, the same man approached a woman who was walking her dog near the corner of 15th Street and 76th Drive. She yelled and pushed him away.  ~ CBS 12 News

“This is very unusual for beautiful Indian River County,” said Sheriff Eric Flowers. “He has so far, not committed to whatever act he wants to do whether that is grab them, we don’t know what his intentions are. We are happy they were both able to get away.”

“Our team has been out there ever since this happened. This is our top priority right now, there is no doubt about it,” Flowers said.

The Sheriff’s Office asked that If anyone in the area has information on the masked man or was a witness to either incident, to please call 772-978-6240. Flowers also encouraged residents in the area to stay vigilant and take proper safety precautions, such as locking their doors, walking with a friend at night and reporting any suspicious activity.
