Shot and killed in the line of duty: Memphis PD shares End of Watch, Officer Geoffrey Redd
Earlier this week, the Memphis Police Department, “with heavy hearts,” announced the End of Watch of one of their own Tennessee Brothers in Blue. Memphis Police Officer Geoffrey Redd, a former Marine, and also a loving husband, father, and grandfather, died this weekend, two weeks after he was shot on a suspicious person call.
On February 2 at approximately 12:32 pm, officers responded to a call at the Poplar-White Station Library.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood with Florida’s Volusia County Sherriff’s Office also shared the news of Officer Redd’s passing, saying that on that fateful day in February, Redd was responding to a subject who got into an altercation with a patron at the public library. As Officer Redd and another officer approached, the subject pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Officer Redd was shot and critically wounded before the other officer returned fire and killed the shooter.
According to the Memphis PD, following the shooting, Officer Redd was rushed to Regional One Hospital in extremely critical condition. Despite the best efforts and excellent medical care by those at Regional One, Officer Redd succumbed to his injuries on February 18 while at the hospital.
This wasn’t the first time Officer Redd had been critically injured. Several years ago, he was struck by a vehicle while on duty, but returned to work after an extensive recovery. WREG News reported Redd’s daughter, Summerr, as saying that he was the best dad, and loving grandfather.
“He just did everything he could for his daughters,” Summerr said. “There are so many bad people in the world. He was always that good person. He was always there to help someone who was in need.” ~ WREG
Officer Redd became an officer of the Memphis Police Department in February 2008. He served the citizens of Memphis working at Old Allen, Union, Raines, Mt Moriah, Ridgeway, and Appling Farms Stations. He also served his country as a United States Marine. Officer Redd was a husband, a father, and the Director of Security at his church.
