Steve Bannon: Former Trump strategist sentenced to four-month prison stint
On Friday, October 21, Stephen K. Bannon was sentenced to four months in the slammer and ordered to pay a fine of $6,500 on two counts of Contempt of Congress stemming from his failure to comply with a subpoena issued by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 breach of the United States Capitol.
After his verdict was announced, Bannon was “characteristically defiant” and was quoted by CNN as saying:
“On November 8, there’s going to (be) judgment on the illegitimate Biden regime. And quite frankly, Nancy Pelosi and the entire committee.”
The 68-year-old Bannon was found guilty by a jury on July 22, 2022, of one contempt count related to his refusal to appear for a deposition and another count related to his refusal to produce documents in response to a subpoena from the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. The guilty verdict followed a trial in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Bannon’s legal problems began back on September 23, 2021, when the Select Committee issued its subpoena to the Trump loyalist. In that subpoena, the Select Committee said it had reason to believe that he had information relevant to understanding events related to January 6, 2021.
The subpoena required him to appear and produce documents to the Select Committee on October 7, 2021, and to appear for a deposition before the Select Committee on October 14, 2021. Bannon refused to appear to give testimony as required by subpoena and refused to produce documents in compliance with a subpoena. Following his refusals to cooperate with Congress, Bannon was indicted on the contempt charges on November 12, 2021.
Bannon rose to infamy as the former Chief Strategist and Counselor to ex-president Donald President. After leaving the White House and Trump’s employ in 2017, Bannon has been enjoying life as a private citizen. He also gained notoriety when he served as the executive chair to the far-right syndicated news, opinion, and commentary website, Breitbart News.
The judge overseeing Bannon’s contempt trial said that Bannon can remain out of prison while he appeals his four month jail sentence, “as Bannon is unlikely to flee or pose a danger to the community, “ according to NPR.
The case against Bannon was prosecuted by the Fraud, Public Corruption, and Civil Rights Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. For more on Bannon’s Contempt of Congress prison sentence, see the video accompanying this article.
