Stoned teen felon racks up ‘more than a dozen charges’ during grand theft auto police chase
Yesterday, Florida’s Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) released word that a 17-year-old was arrested this week on more than a dozen charges after he led deputies on a in stolen vehicle car chase – while he was under the influence of drugs. The Sheriff’s Office said that on Tuesday, teenager Ruami Giron was behind the wheel of a white Hyundai SUV that blew through a four-way stop at the intersection of Shadowlawn Drive and Estey Avenue in East Naples. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop but Giron sped away.
Deputies then engaged in a pursuit that ended when Giron crashed the SUV into two other vehicles on Davis Boulevard near U.S. 41 East.
Deputies also said Giron had a loaded pistol in his waistband when they arrested him. A large knife was inside the vehicle in plain view.
A CCSO drug recognition expert evaluated Giron and determined he was under the influence of cannabis. Giron admitted to deputies to using a high-potency marijuana product just before getting in the vehicle and driving. Deputies said the SUV was reported stolen out of the Countryside community in East Naples last week. The vehicle was undriveable and sustained an estimated $5,000 damage after Giron crashed it.
Giron was charged with:
- grand theft auto,
- fleeing and eluding,
- carrying a concealed firearm,
- possession of a firearm by a juvenile,
- reckless driving,
- hit and run-leaving the scene of a crash with property damage (3 counts),
- DUI,
- DUI with property damage (3 counts), and ,
- driving without a license
Deputies said Giron, who turns 18 at the end of the month, already has a long history of felony offenses including robbery, burglary and grand theft auto. This wasn’t the first time Giron has fled deputies in a stolen car. He was arrested last October on multiple felonies after leading deputies on a pursuit in a stolen Mercedes.
