Study reveals the most dangerous and the safest States in the U.S. – the results are surprising

A new study has shed light on the states battling the highest crime rates in the United States. If you thought your state was relatively safe, the findings might shock you.  In the past year alone, over seven million crimes were reported nationwide, highlighting the serious issue of crime in America.

The study conducted by Lawsuit Legal News analyzed FBI Crime Data Explorer data to rank U.S. states by crime rates. It examined serious offenses like rape, homicide, aggravated assault, arson, burglary, and motor vehicle theft, providing a complete picture of crime in the U.S.

The most frequently reported crime nationwide is larceny-theft, followed closely by aggravated assault and motor vehicle theft.

The Most Dangerous States

• New Mexico has claimed the unfortunate title of the most dangerous state, having the highest crime rate in the United States. Its ranking comes as no surprise, given its consistent history of high crime rates, particularly in violent crime categories. With 3,464 crimes per 100,000 people, New Mexico faces significant challenges in combating crime.
• Colorado ranks second with a crime rate of 3,347 per 100,000 people, making it the second-most dangerous state.
• Washington has the third-highest crime rate in the U.S., with 3,263 crimes per 100,000 people.
• Tennessee (fourth) and Louisiana (fifth) round out the top five most dangerous states, with 2,995 and 2,990 crimes per 100,000 people, respectively.
• Nevada takes the sixth spot, with 2,960 crimes per 100,000 residents.
• Oregon is seventh with 2,956 crimes per 100,000 people, and Arkansas is eighth with 2,840 crimes per 100,000 people.
• California reported over a million crimes in the latest data. This makes it the state with the most total crimes. But when adjusted for population, its crime rate is 2,832 per 100,000 people, which ranks the Golden State ninth. 
• Alaska rounds out the 10 most dangerous states with a crime rate of 2,664 per 100,000 people. Being remote hasn’t protected Alaska from crime, and a lot of its crimes are violent.

The Safest U.S. States

• New Hampshire takes the title of the safest state in the U.S. with only 965 crimes per 100,000 people. This isn’t surprising because it has very low levels of violent and property crimes.
• Mississippi, despite being located in a region often associated with higher crime rates, has proven to be a standout in safety, ranking second overall with 984 crimes per 100,000 people.
• Florida, a state known for its large population and bustling urban centers, ranks third with 1,087 crimes per 100,000 people. This is a significant achievement for one of the most populous states in the country.
• Idaho ranks fourth with 1,062 crimes per 100,000 residents, while Maine rounds out the top five safest U.S. states with 1,255 crimes per 100,000 people.
