Only weeks after winning the Babe Ruth award for the Most Valuable Player for his efforts with the Rays  during the 2020 post season, Tampa Bay outfielder Randy Arozarena was arrested in the Mexican State of Yucatan for “for allegedly trying to abduct his daughter from her mother’s home and assaulting the woman’s father,” according to Yahoo! Sports.

Arozarena is expected to be detained in a Mexican jail for at least 48 hours while prosecutors decide what kind of charges, if any, they’ll be pressing against him.  As of this writing, Arozarena has not been charged with anything.

Arozarena’s agent, Abel Guerra, released a statement to the media saying that, “The only thing I know is he was hyper-sensitive about making sure that the child’s needs were being taken care of.” He was always sending money down there, and he was very involved in her life. I don’t want to speculate about (anything else).”

“We are aware of reports that Randy Arozarena was detained in Mexico,” the Rays said in a brief statement. “We are gathering more information on this situation, and we have no further comment at this time.”

Major League Baseball is likely to investigate under its joint domestic violence policy with the players’ association.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan, reported that Major League Baseball is looking into the allegations against Arozaren. “The MLB and MLBPA joint domestic violence policy would dictate any punishment Arozarena might receive, since the alleged incident involved at least one member of his family.”

The 25-year-old rookie with the Rays hit .377 with 10 homers and 14 RBIs in 20 postseason games with Tampa Bay this season, which earned him that MVP award.
