Taylor Swift being blocked from performing her old songs on upcoming American Music Awards show
Singer, songwriter, philanthropist and mega-country star turned mega-pop star Taylor Swift tweeted that her plans to perform some of her older tunes at the 2019 American Music Awards show and in an upcoming Netflix documentary have been squashed, legally, by her former label’s management. On November 24, Swift was scheduled to appear and perform at the AMAs and receive the Artist of the Decade award.
Her plan for that performance was to play a medley of some of her biggest hits.
But Swift said Thursday that the new owner of her older music, Scooter Braun, and the founder of her former record label, Scott Borchetta, are preventing her from performing her older songs. Swift said the duo are also preventing her older music from being used in a Netflix documentary that has been in production the past few years. Swift says that she will only be allowed to access her master recordings if she agrees to not record new, copycat versions of her old songs and stops mentioning Braun and Borchetta by name. ~ UPI
“The message being sent to me is very clear. Basically, be a good little girl and shut up. Or you’ll be punished. This is WRONG. Neither of these men had a hand in the writing of those songs,” she said.
“I just want to be able to perform MY OWN music. That’s it. I’ve tried to work this out privately through my team but have not been able to resolve anything. Right now my performance at the AMAs, the Netflix documentary and any other recorded events I am planning to playing November of 2020 are a question mark. I love you guys and I thought you should know what’s been going on,” Swift continued.
Swift’s BFF and singer, songwriter, actress, and television produce Selena Gomez, took to Instagram to defend her contemporary.
“My heart is so heavy right now,” she wrote. “It makes me sick and extremely angry. I don’t mind if there may be retaliation. This is my opinion. It’s greed, manipulation and power. There is no heart or thought of anyone else’s. No respect for the words my friend has written since she was a 14 year old in her bedroom. You robbed and crushed one of our best songwriters of our time an opportunity to celebrate all of her music with fans and the world.”

Even though Braun and Borchetta have specifically warned her not to do so, Page Six reports that the unflappable Taylor Swift said she’ll be re-recording her first five albums in the upcoming year.
