A teacher from New Braunfels High School in New Braunfels, Texas, committed suicide earlier this week – just as an investigation regarding him being involved in an improper relationship with a student was getting underway.  The teacher, Chase Hyland, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Monday, according to a report from News 4 in San Antonio.

On the same day that he killed himself, the teacher was placed on administrative leave due to the complaint and allegations filed against him.

The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation of Hyland’s death. Deputies found him with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound just after noon on Monday along Highway 16, north of Kerrville. He was taken to Peterson Regional Hospital for treatment but died that afternoon, according to KENS-5.

No formal charges have been filed against Hyland

“The events that unfolded today are not anything we anticipated would happen but have become a reality,” the district said in a statement. “Mr. Hyland was placed on administrative leave on Monday morning after the administration learned of a complaint against him. The investigation was just in the beginning stages and quickly took an unforeseen turn that afternoon.” ~ My San Antonio

Hyland was a History and Social Studies teacher and had been employed by the New Braunfels Independent School District for almost 10 years. In 2015, he was named the New Braunfels Independent School District Teacher of the Year.

The school district is providing counseling services to students and staff.

Hyland was also involved with the New Braunfels’ Jay Howard Driver Development (JHDD) as evidenced by the video below.
