Experts at Venture Smarter used Ahrefs to find the average monthly Google searches in the US for 210 of the most popular movies featuring romance as a major theme. The movies were then ranked to determine which are the most sought-after.
1. Elemental (2023) – Monthly searches for the Disney and Pixar movie have averaged at 200,000, making it the most popular romantic movie in the United States. This heart-warming tale of love is perfect for families and couples alike, looking to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their kids or as a pair. Directed by Peter Sohn, Elemental creates a story of romance in the face of adversity that will set your heart aflutter.
2. Titanic (1997) – This epic tale of romance, love and heartbreak receives 133,000 monthly searches on average in the US, placing it second in the ranking. Jack and Rose’s timeless story of love is set against the backdrop of the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic. It makes the perfect choice for couples looking for a tearjerker that celebrates love and connection, or for big fans of the legendary Kate and Leo.
3. No Hard Feelings (2023) This entertaining and sexy rom-com stars Jennifer Lawrence as a desperate woman about to lose her family home, before agreeing to date a wealthy couple’s awkward teenage son for money. This feel-good movie reinforces ideas of personal growth and finding confidence in one’s own skin, making it the perfect Valentine’s viewing for singles and couples alike. The movie has proven popular with American audiences, as it is searched for 126,000 times monthly on average.

Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) – While this murder-mystery film might not seem the most conventional choice for Valentine’s Day viewing, the adaptation of the bestselling novel by Delia Owens offers a captivating love story amidst themes of resilience, survival, and murder. Set in the marshes of North Carolina, the film offers a deep exploration of love, loss, and the enduring power of human connection, making it an ideal pick for this special day. It receives 61,000 monthly searches on average.

This heart wrenching tale of everlasting love through the ages remains a popular romantic favorite in the US, with 53,000 searches for the movie each month.
7. Her (2013) – Starring Joaquin Phoenix, this romantic drama follows the unconventional romance between a man and an artificial intelligence operating system. The movie delves into themes of loneliness, intimacy, and the search for meaningful relationships, and invites viewers to contemplate the nature of love in our digital age. This unique option for Valentine’s Day viewing receives 46,600 searches on average per month.
8. Me Before You (2016) – Fans of this Valentine’s Day classic have been searching for the movie 44,200 times on average each month. Adapted from the novel by Jojo Moyes, Emilia Clarke stars as the carer of Sam Claflin’s character, Will, who was made tetraplegic after being hit by a motorbike. This story of blossoming love and love till the end will undoubtedly have you reaching for the tissues.
9. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) – If you’re looking for more of a steamy watch this Valentine’s Day, this is the movie for you. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan’s erotic romantic drama is also based on a novel, which follows the life of Anastasia Steele after she begins a sadomasochistic relationship with businessman, Christian Grey. While this movie might not have been a hit with the critics, it certainly is with fans, who search for it 43,500 per month on average.
10. My Fault/Culpa mía (2023) – The Spanish romantic drama was a hit with audiences when it first premiered as, according to Amazon Prime Video, it achieved the highest three-day viewership numbers for any non-English local original in the service’s history. Based on a Wattpad story by Mercedes Ron, this sexy, action-packed movie has something for everyone with forbidden love, underground fighting, rich kids, and street racing.
A spokesperson for Venture Smarter discussed the findings: “The ranking highlights how people are drawn to watching romantic classics from previous decades, most likely because they offer timeless stories and themes that resonate across generations, and capture universal experiences of love and relationships.”
