‘The Weeknd’ to headline Super Bowl LV Halftime Show
Worldwide phenom Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, a.k.a. “The Weeknd” has been tapped to perform as headliner during the February 21, 2021 Super Bowl LV Halftime Show. The 30-year old started recording in 2010 when he cemented a certain mystique in the industry by anonymously uploading his music to YouTube.
The Canadian singer and songwriter has since amassed a global fanbase, become a multi-award winning artist, and recently, was named one of the most influential people of 2020 by Time Magazine.
Regarded for his creative vision, The Weeknd is known for his genre-bending music and redefining storytelling, both sonically and visually.
“We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl and one can only dream of being in that position. I’m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year,” The Weeknd said.
“The Weeknd has introduced a sound all his own. His soulful uniqueness has defined a new generation of greatness in music and artistry,” said Shawn Jay-Z Carter. “This is an extraordinary moment in time and the Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show is going to be an extraordinary experience with an extraordinary performer.”
The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show is the most-watched musical performance of the year, with more than 104 million viewers tuning in to last year’s show. Super Bowl LV marks Pepsi’s tenth year as title sponsor of the Super Bowl Halftime Show and 19th year as an NFL partner.
Past halftime performances include Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Prince, Madonna, and more.
Super Bowl LV is scheduled for February 7, 2021 and will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. This will be the fifth Super Bowl hosted by the Tampa area and the third one held at Raymond James Stadium. The game will be televised nationally by CBS.
It will be the fourth time that the Super Bowl is in the same state in back-to-back years with Super Bowl LIV taking place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Odds for the game are already out, and the Kansas City Chiefs are next year’s favorite to win it all at 7-1 odds.
The San Francisco 49ers trail the Chiefs with 8-1 odds, followed by the Baltimore Ravens at 8-1.
The New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots close out the top five at 10-1 and 12-1 odds, respectively. ~ per NBC Sports
