Third murder-suicide over last five weeks recorded in Harford County
What appears to be a troubling and mysterious trend in Northern Maryland has claimed the lives of two more Harford County residents. Detectives with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) are investigating a murder-suicide after a 43-year-old Edgewood woman and her 48-year-old husband were found dead in their home. This would be the third murder–suicide in the area since October 16.
On November 18, at approximately 10:29 a.m., HCSO deputies responded to the 1600 block of Nuttal Avenue in Edgewood, Maryland, for the report of a person suffering from a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, deputies were informed at least two individuals were inside the residence, and one may have been shot.
When deputies entered the home round 10:55 a.m., they found an uninjured female and moved her outside of the residence to safety.
In an upstairs bedroom, deputies located two additional individuals, identified as Jose Ermelindo Corea Mejia and Denia Yamileth Corea, each deceased of apparent gunshot wounds.
The initial investigation indicates that the husband, Jose, shot his wife, Denia, before turning the gun on himself.
Detectives assigned to the Forensic Services Unit responded to process the scene for evidence. Both individuals were transported to the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine cause and manner of these deaths.
This murder–suicide on Nuttal Avenue is the third murder -suicide to hit Harford County in the last five weeks.

Cristie Hopkins, a spokesperson with the Sheriff’s Office, told The Baltimore Sun that the number of murder-suicide cases in such a short period of time was abnormal for Harford County, adding it would be impossible to speculate what might be the root cause of the recent trend. She added that resources are available for the community for anyone suffering from a mental health or domestic violence issues.
The Klein Family Crisis Center’s 24-hour hotline, 1-800-NEXT-STEP, is available for anyone suffering from mental health issues. Anyone suffering from domestic or sexual abuse can reach out to the sheriff’s office, Harford County’s Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center (SARC), or the courts, she said. ~ The Baltimore Sun
The investigation into these latest two deaths remains active and ongoing. The motive and time of death are still undetermined; and the Sheriff’s Office won’t be releasing any additional details at this time. Detectives believe this to be an isolated incident, with no greater threat to the community.
