Trash truck crashes through Conowingo Dam Jersey wall falling 80 feet, killing driver
On November 26 around 1:30 a.m., a trash truck did not negotiate a curve in the road on Route 1 atop the Conowingo Dam in Cecil County, Maryland. That truck ended up crashing through a Jersey wall on the dam and falling about 80 feet to a dry area of the lower portion of the dam. The driver of that trash truck died in the crash.
The trash truck appeared to be driving southbound when the crash occurred. The deceased driver has been identified as Luis Garcia, 53, of Ridgewood, New York. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.
Around 1:30 a.m. troopers from the North East Barrack responded to the area of southbound Route 1 and Route 222 in Cecil County for the report of a crash involving a commercial vehicle. According to a preliminary investigation, the male driver of a dump trailer apparently failed to negotiate a right bend in the roadway and crashed. The vehicle struck the jersey wall, overturned and fell about 80 feet to the bottom of the dam. ~ Maryland State Police
Route 1 was closed for about 5 hours in the area of the crash. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted with the road closure.
Two cranes and a construction crew were employed to clean up and remove debris from the crash. No damage was done to the dam.
