Trump Calls Roseanne after successful reboot of iconic TV series
On March 27, the reboot of “Roseanne” made its prime-time TV debut – 21 years after the original “Roseanne” aired its May 1997 series finale. The reboot was a ratings hit, “and was watched by 10 percent more viewers” than watched the 1997 finale of ABC’s original “Roseanne,”” according to Snopes. And President Donald Trump called Roseanne the day after the reboot aired to congratulate the show’s star.
Roseanne Barr is a Trump supporter in real-life. And that support made its way into the scripting of the reboot, with Roseanne’s political views clashing with the Democratic views of her TV sister Jackie, played by Laurie Metcalf.
MSN quoted Barr as saying that receiving the presidential phone call was “pretty exciting” and that much of the conversation focused on the president praising Barr for the high ratings the debut received.
“It was pretty exciting, I’ll tell you that, they said, ‘Hold please for the President of the United States of America’ and that was about the most exciting thing ever and it was very sweet of him to congratulate us,” Barr said.
“We talked about a lot of things, he is just happy for me,” she continued. “I have known him for many years and he has done a lot of nice things for me over the years and it was just a friendly conversation about work and television and ratings.”
More than 18 million viewers saw the reboot. Those Nielsen ratings numbers represent “the highest of any comedy on the major broadcast networks in at least four years,” according to MSN.
Not to be outdone, Buzzfeed also reports that Donald Trump Jr. also congratulated Roseanne on Twitter.
“Roseanne” airs on ABC on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. The show has been approved for an introductory eight episodes, with more very likely to follow based on the show’s high ratings.
