Update: Suspect in custody following release of video in fatal Lauderdale robbery
Following the July 19 release of a surveillance video depicting a suspect in the theft and murder of a North Lauderdale, Florida, store clerk, a 19-year-old man has been arrested for that murder. The suspect was identified as Tyrone Fields Jr. of S.W. Sixth Way in Deerfield Beach. The arrest came one day after the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) homicide detectives released surveillance video of Fields in the store.
Around 12:40 p.m. on July 17, Fields entered Aunt Molly’s Food Store, located at 1691 S. State Road 7. He took money from the cash register and left. Fields returned to the store shortly after and shot the 61-year-old Ali. BSO deputies from North Lauderdale and paramedics from Tamarac Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Ali was transported to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Following the release of the video, BSO detectives and Broward CrimeStoppers received a number of tips. The homicide detectives’ investigation led them to an associate of Fields’ who encouraged him to meet with law enforcement. Around 12:30 p.m. on July 20, Fields turned himself in at Fort Lauderdale Police’s station.
Fields is looking at one count of murder and one count of robbery with firearm.
Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to contact BSO Homicide Detective James Hayes at 954-321-4231.
