Vero Beach High School student arrested with loaded gun after threatening another student
On Wednesday afternoon, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in Vero Beach, Florida, received a report that a 17-year-old Vero Beach High School (VBHS) student made threats to harm another student at the same school. An investigation ensued; and the school’s Resource Deputies along with school officials worked together to question the student who was making the threats.
During the investigation, a loaded handgun was recovered from the student’s backpack.
The student, whose name has not been released, was immediately placed into custody and charged with the following:
- Possession of Weapon on School Property (F.S.S. 790.115.2A),
- Carry Concealed Firearm (F.S.S. 790.01.2),
- Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon (F.S.S. 784.021.1A), and
- Criminal Mischief (F.S.S. 806.13)
Due to the school’s zero tolerance policy regarding bringing loaded weapons on campus, the student will not be able to return to VBHS. “Our team is still looking into a lot of the details such as you know where the gun came from, how he had access to it. All those were details that were still actively trying to track down right now,” Sheriff Eric Flower said, WPTV reported.
Wednesday’s incident comes after deputies arrested a different high school student last week who was accused of making threats to faculty and staff at Vero Beach High School.
School officials said another student reported the threat, which they say is a good reminder that “if you see something, say something,” according to WPBF.
