On January 10, officials in Baltimore County reported that a 98-year-old woman died in a Cockeysville, Maryland, house fire that erupted just before midnight on Wednesday night.  Baltimore County Police identified the victim as Wanda Mary Shattuck, who lived in the 800 block of West Padonia Rd. in Cockeysville – which was the site of the blaze.

Wanda Mary Shattuck was born on March 22, 1920, according to her obituary.

Fire units were dispatched at 11:35 p.m. for a dwelling fire that was fully involved when the first engine arrived. Neighbors informed the first responders that an elderly woman was inside the home.

Fire crews entered the house, a single-story rancher, and located Shattuck. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire officials said that Wednesday night’s house fire was an aggressive one that was exacerbated by high winds. At 11:52 p.m., fire commanders evacuated all fire personnel from the structure due to unsafe and deteriorating conditions. From that point, fire crews used defensive operations to fight the fire. The fire, which destroyed the home, was knocked down at 12:46 a.m.

It took the fire department until about 4:30 a.m. to get that fire under control.

Baltimore County Police fire investigators continue to investigate the cause of this fire.

This one-alarm fire required additional apparatus, including a tanker strike team to provide additional water. About 30 pieces of equipment responded to the blaze.
